Identifying Periodontal Disease
A film of bacteria - called plaque - is constantly forming on our teeth. Gingivitis, the first stage of periodontal disease, occurs when plaque is not properly and consistently removed. The gums are tender and may bleed when you brush, floss, or even eat hard foods. Regular professional cleanings will remove plaque and the condition can be reversed.
If gingivitis is ignored, however, it will worsen and move onto the next stage: Periodontitis. This occurs when plaque develops into calculus, commonly known as tartar. It may take as little as 24 hours for plaque to develop into tartar. As tartar attacks, the gums begin to recede from the teeth and bone loss may happen.
Advanced Periodontitis is the third stage of periodontal disease. As gums and bone are destroyed, the likelihood of tooth loss increases unless a dentist’s treatment is obtained.
Periodontal Treatment and Maintenance from an Experienced Dentist
 Your dentist and dental hygienist will carefully examine you during your checkup for evidence of periodontal disease. If they see signs of it, they’ll recommend treatment appropriate for your condition.
Improving oral hygiene at home as well as professional cleanings will be recommended if the disease is at an early stage. In later stages, a deep cleaning procedure known as scaling may be called for, in which the affected areas will be numbed and tartar, plaque and infection are removed below the gum line. Root planing, may also be performed in which rough spots on roots are smoothed to remove infection and help your gums heal.
The diode laser for laser bacterial reduction is also an integral part of our periodontal therapy treatment. These lasers are a highly effective weapon for your dentist, decontaminating and shrinking diseased pockets between your teeth and gums where bacteria live and your toothbrush cannot reach.
In special circumstances, we may recommend our patients see a periodontist, which is a gum and supporting bone specialist. Oral surgery may also be required in severe cases.
